St. Lucia is a small town on the east coast of South Africa. St. Lucia happened to be the place where South African born singer and producer Jean-Philip Grobler spent his summer holidays in his youth. Thus Grobler's alias St. Lucia was conceived.
The aptly named group delivers tropical poolside pop with euphoric synth riffs accompanied by Grobler's strong and sustained choirboy vocals complemented by his girlfriend Patricia Beranek's soft harmony. I say group even though to begin with Grobler considered St. Lucia as his solo project, he employs the talents of many other artists on this EP which has helped St. Lucia evolve into a diverse live performance. This includes a sexy sax solo in "All Eyes On You" which really sets the track off.
Grobler grew up with a musical background studying music in England for three years after travelling the world with the Drakensberg Boys Choir School.
The entire EP maintains a very distinct emotive and nostalgic synth-pop sound that fits in with the intricately engineered tropical image of the group (Sick shirt Grobler). St. Lucia is now based in Brooklyn and are about to set out on their tour of Australia (by passing New Zealand of course), going onto America and Canada.
